Abstract: The article examines the use of the history of science in classroom instruction as a vehicle to promote a student's understanding of the nature of science (NOS). Topics include the importance of explicitly and reflectively teaching students about the NOS tenets. A partial list of those tenets, such as the role of experiments in acquiring knowledge, the creative component of science, and the historical, cultural, and social influences of science, is presented. An in-depth discussion of a method for curriculum development based on the writings of author Henry David Thoreau, forest succession, and NOS tenets is presented.
