Abstract: For years the early American republic's political and educational systems were wedded to classicism as the inspirational guide for the nation's future. Particularly for the Founding Fathers, the classics embodied the education necessary for a virtuous citizenry. This impact on the nation's educational system remained strong until the early 20th century. A changing economy after 1800, the Jacksonian charge of elitism, and the evangelical Protestant resistance to Deism led to the gradual decline of the classics' influence on American education and its replacement by more "practical" systems in the early 20th century.
