Abstract: The article discusses research which illustrates the effectiveness of service learning. The authors note conflicting opinions regarding the value of service learning and comment that few service learning studies are conducted using research methodology supported by the U.S. Department of Education. Studies suggest that service learning improves academic achievement in reading and language skills, enhances student engagement, motivation and attitudes and promotes citizenship and civic responsibility. Students in service learning programs also exhibited improved social skills and leadership. The authors suggest researchers should conduct additional experimental and correlational studies and ensure the quality of service learning interventions being studied.
