Abstract: The article discusses what would comprise the perfect library, examining historical models such as the ancient Library at Alexandria, the New York Public Library as a 1911 model of the perfect library, and libraries in literature such as that envisioned by Jorge Luis Borges in his story "The Library of Babel." It discusses the opportunities offered by the Internet and evaluates them based on compliance with models of the perfect library. It cites researchers Johanna Drucker and Paul Duguid, who raise issues about the design of the digital library, noting that it needs to be thought about before implementation rather than reverse-engineered after the fact. Researcher Robert Darnton is cited for his criticism of the restricted access implied by copyright law in digital models.
