Abstract: The article discusses reading instruction aimed at gifted readers and the role of the teacher-librarian in supporting high-ability learners. Particular focus is given to the program Advanced Readers At Risk: Rescuing an Underserved Population funded by a Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Education Federal Grant. The qualities held by gifted readers including reading habits, performance on reading assessments and standardized tests, and vocabulary skills are examined. Book selection for advanced readers, strategies to encourage a love of reading in advanced readers, and ways in which teacher-librarians can challenge gifted readers are also discussed. INSET: 17 Don'ts for Gifted Readers.
