| Abstract: | The article focuses on laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), which is acid reflux that affects the larynx and pharynx. Symptoms of LPR include laryngeal swelling, erythema and interarytenoid hypertrophy. The author notes that there are conflicting ideas concerning diagnosis and treatment for LPR. Injury and damage occur to the larynx when acid and pepsin come into contact with laryngeal mucosa. LPR is often treated with proton pump inhibitors and promotility medications. The author encourages singers to familiarize themselves with LPR. |
