Abstract: The article discusses the relationships between college presidents and chancellors, and the conflcits that could arise in the transition process. According two the author, only 25 percent of former and sitting presidents agreed with the idea of a former president remaining after his or her term. The article provides a case study from the University of Redlands centered on outgoing president Jim Appleton and his successor, Stuart Dorsey.
