Abstract: The article presents information on New Mexico's Genizaros, Native Americans who served as slaves to Spanish settlers. Featured individual is Maria Rita, a girl who, according to the author, was baptized as Catholic by force. It notes that Genizaros were stolen from their families and then sold and auctioned to Spanish settlers. The author states that the history of Genizaros, for others, is obscured by shame and fear, but the generation as of July 2011, is celebrating the history of adaptation, cross-cultural communication and perseverance.
