| Abstract: | The article presents a report on the action taken in the summer of 2007 by the board of trustees and the administration of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) which suspended its faculty senate and replaced it with a transitional structure of faculty governance. The step was taken following the refusal of the senate to follow a board directive to amend its constitution to exclude all except the tenured and tenure-track faculty from the senate's constituency and membership. The investigating committee of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) found the suspension of RPI's senate as a prima facie violation of shared governance. |
