| Abstract: | The author discusses the economic condition of several U.S. cities including Muncie, Indiana, Spring Hill, Tennessee, and Nashville, Tennessee, in 2011. The author states that he toured all three cities in an attempt to establish the economic symbolism of so-called "Middletown" in the U.S., particularly what he identifies as a decline in employment and housing retention. The author reviews the economic opportunities in the mid-20th century that were offered by the towns in industrial factories and plants. The article examines the industrial presence in the towns of automotive companies such as General Motors and Nissan. |
