Abstract: It is now widely accepted that non-traditional higher education students - in Australia those from rural, indigenous, first generation or low socio-economic backgrounds - have an important role to play in the diversity and quality of universities and the communities they serve. However, in practice this role remains undervalued and relatively untapped. The experience of Residential Services at La Trobe University (LTU) is that, given the opportunity and appropriate structures and guidance, such students have the ability to become academic high achievers, skilled leaders, communicators and talented future employees.This paper highlights the importance of going beyond providing non-traditional students with access to higher education, by also ensuring the availability and quality of continuing support programmes to enable their success. Through a case study of Residential Services at La Trobe University in Australia, it outlines the support programmes and examines the outcomes - including academic results and acquisition of core graduate attributes - achieved through these programmes and the ways in which these can be exported to a wider university community.
