| Abstract: | The author analyzes the controversy over teaching religious education (RE) in schools, specifically whether or not teachers should openly make value judgments on religious beliefs and doctrines that go against established scientific and historical facts, such as creationism and Holocaust denial. The author argues that religious education should be directed instead of nondirected, and that students should be taught scientific theories as truth and religious belief in terms of historical context. The author discusses atheism, impartiality, and reasoned argument, and cites philosophers Michael Hand, Michael Reiss, and Eamonn Callan. |
