| Abstract: | The article discusses the popularity of electronic books (e-books) among the public and how public libraries in the U.S. are trying to get access to e-books in this digital shift. The author reports that many people find it more convenient to purchase books on e-book readers, such as electronic commerce company Amazon's Kindle and U.S. book retailer Barnes & Noble's Nook, than it is to physically borrow books from a local public library. Libraries have a difficult time getting e-books because of licensing and rights agreements. Public libraries are also lacking tools to manage e-books and digital materials. Though many libraries have a small selection of e-books, the number of e-book checkouts is growing, emphasizing libraries' necessity for additional resources. |
