Abstract: The article discusses schools in the Neath Port Talbot (NPT) district of Wales that instituted best practices based on high-reliability organizations (HROs) in order to improve student scores on the General Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (GCSEs). The authors worked with schools such as the Sandfields Comprehensive School and Cwmtawe Secondary School from 1996-2000 on the High Reliability Schools (HRS) project, which involved improvement techniques such as analysis of student achievement data, teacher and student collaboration, and establishing standard operating procedures (SOPs). Recommendations to educators for implementing similar programs include using classroom observations to evaluate teachers, hiring teachers based on project goals, and maintaining school buildings. INSET: The British national exam: GCSEs.
