Abstract: The article examines components that promote literacy engagement in middle school language arts, social studies, science and mathematics classes. According to the author, one of these components is choice, which means allowing students to have a say on what they want to read in the classroom. Another factor is accessibility, which pertains to giving students reading materials that are not beyond their level of understanding. She adds that rereading can also help extend students' knowledge.
