Abstract: In this article, the author reflects on the origins and development of the field of environmental history in response to an article on the subject by historian Paul Sutter on the same subject. He notes the importance of a roundtable discussion on environmental history that was published in a 1990 issue of "Journal of American History" to field's rise to prominence. The author is also critical of the four core environmental history categories proposed by Sutter in his article--government environmental management, agriculture, health, and urbanization--as well as his focus on modernity. It is argued that more focus should be given to oceanic spaces within the American history field.
