Abstract: The article reflects on problems associated with close reading of the text by students, which is one of the strictures of U.S. Common Core State Standards (CCSS) education initiative, in context to reading civil right movement leader Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham Jail." The topics mentioned include advantages of critical reading, effects of restricting a student within the context of text on development of its cognitive skills, and problems with standardization of tests.
