Abstract: This manuscript examined the literature on intimate partner violence in the Appalachian region of the United States. The purpose of this literature review is to introduce health educators to Appalachia and to identify Appalachian risk factors that are documented in prior research studies. Findings suggest that while there is an abundance of literature on intimate partner violence, there is a dearth of research specific to it in Appalachia. Four commonalities were evident, including culture, geographic isolation, lack of anonymity, and use of weapons. Further complicating this narrative are the often perpetuated stereotypes of a person living in the Appalachian region of the United States. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
