| Abstract: | In this article, we examine national and Texas demographic trends with respect to student enrollment in community colleges. In this literature review, we addressed the role of community colleges in workforce development due to increased accountability. Also present was a discussion of the types of marketable skills and job-preparedness programs that are provided for students by Texas community colleges. Finally, the literature review included an overview of MSAA certificates offered at Texas community colleges, and the increased research related to short-term certification programs as a career pathway and bridge to higher education, particularly for underserved minority students.
