Abstract: The article discusses the tension between factual content and historical critical thinking skills in college history courses, and presents a case study concerning techniques and rationale utilized in the first half of a world history survey course, particularly the use of group quizzing. The article examines the difficulties of teaching world history, content as a focus of primary history education, and the concept of the coverage model of teaching. It also discusses desired learning outcomes, progressive learning challenges, and student perceptions of quizzing.
