| Abstract: | Located in the western part of the Tell Chain of Algeria, the Beni-Chougrane Mountains are characterized by recent tectonic activity in a compressive regime affecting the entire chain. Shortening-oriented NNW/SSE constantly generates significant seismic activity along active tectonic structure such as faults and folds which extended over tens of kilometers. The southern front of the Beni-Chougrani Mountains presents a very interesting folding structure, where the relationship between the morphotectonic evolution and the geomorphological indicators have been easily applied. For this purpose, 16 profiles of hydrographic network arranged perpendicularly in the southern flank of the fold were analyzed. Results obtained show that: (i) channels oriented 60° N are arranged parallel to the folding axis and correspond to the collecting drains belonging to two stages of the fold amplification, (ii) the dendritic and/or linear forms of hydrographic networks associated respectively with immature and mature stages, (iii) channels profiles show various shapes suggesting spatial gradient of uplift rate along the fold, (iv) growths of the strata show a tabular structure in the form of a shoulder, especially in the central part. Our results show that geomorphological anomalies coincide perfectly with the fold amplification characterized by a hinge migration towards the South according to the current direction of the shortening (340° N). The equilibrated geological cross-section obtained by numerical modeling show that the surface detachment is located at 1056 m in depth which and can correspond to evaporitic formations of Triassic. The amplitude of the local shortening is estimated almost 35 m especially during the Pleistocene. We highlighted the role of inherited faults in the control of this deformation.
