Abstract: This year marks what would have been the 50th birthday of the British National Oil Corporation (BNOC), which came into existence through the enactment of the Petroleum and Submarine Pipelines Act 1975. This article considers why BNOC came into being, why BNOC ceased to function after a relatively short period of time, and whether any lessons could be learned from BNOC's past that could be helpful in shaping future energy regulatory policies.
