| Abstract: | Kolkata is undergoing fast urban extension and population growth which makes it one of India's fastest-growing metropolitan cities. Migration from the surrounding region is the main driver of population increase which is also responsible for urban sprawl. The study focuses to identify the extent of urban sprawl around the city and the landscape transformation. For the study multidate satellite images, Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) for the year 1990 and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TRIS) for the year 2020 have been taken to study Land Use and Land Cover (LULC). The study depicts the transformation of vegetated land, agricultural land, and fallow lands into built-up areas. The built-up area has increased significantly, rising from 18.39% in 1990 to 52.06% in 2020. In contrast, vegetation cover has decreased from 43.07% in 1990 to 27.89% in 2020. This data indicates a transformation of the land and an expansion of the built-up area outward from the city centre. Low Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values are clearly evident in the Central Business District of Kolkata, extending to the surrounding areas. In stark contrast, the Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) maps of 1990 and 2020 demonstrate a significant and undeniable expansion of built-up areas. This growth is particularly pronounced in the north-eastern part of the city, which has experienced the highest levels of development. Additionally, the southern and south-western regions of Kolkata have also seen considerable growth driven by urban sprawl, showcasing the dynamic nature of the city's expansion.
