Abstract: Understanding the characteristics of atmospheric boundary layer height (ABLH) is important for revealing the formation mechanism of air pollution. The properties of the ABLH in the North China Plain were investigated using an aerosol research lidar network consisting of 13 devices in this region. The ABLH is derived from long-term continuous lidar measurements from 2013 to 2018 using the gradient method. Statistical results from a large data set from the 2017 and 2018 Beijing winters show that PM2.5 concentration is negatively correlated with ABLH when the ABLH is below 1.0 km, typically below 0.7 km. The ABLH range of 0.4 to 0.7 km is the most sensitive region leading to aerosol pollution in Beijing in the winter of 2017 and 2018. Regarding the inter-annual variation of ABLH, after two consecutive years (2013–2015) of decline, the average ABLH of Beijing in winter showed an upward trend from 2016 to 2018, and the annual trend of PM2.5 concentration is inversely proportional to the ABLH. As for the diurnal variability the diurnal cycle still shows a similar trend over the years, with a general minimum in the morning or evening and a maximum in the afternoon. The indistinct diurnal variation characteristics illustrate that the PM2.5 mass concentration has a rather significant effect on the changes of atmospheric boundary layer, Moreover, the regional character of the ABLH in the North China Plain is evident, with higher ABLH in the south than in the north during the air pollution process.
