Abstract: Groundwater vulnerability assessment serves as a pivotal tool for identifying regions at heightened risk of contamination from various sources, contributing to groundwater safeguarding and land use planning endeavors. This research utilizes the SINTACS methodology to assess the susceptibility of groundwater in the Dindigul taluk located in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, India, to various contaminants. This assessment encompasses eight components within the DRASTIC-LU framework. The vulnerability index values under the DRASTIC-LU framework for Dindigul Taluk span the range of 1 to 210 for the year 2020. Five sensitivity categories for groundwater pollution are established: very less, less, average, more, and very more. Dindigul Taluk is classified into five distinct ranges: 1–100, 100–130, 130–160, 160–190, and 190–210. SINTACS, an index-based approach, integrates seven environmental variables, encompassing: (i) Depth to water table (S), (ii) Effective infiltration (I), (iii) Unsaturated zone (N), (iv) Soil Texture (T), (v) Aquifer Type (A), (vi) Hydraulic conductivity (C), (vii) Topographical slope (S). The resultant SINTACS vulnerability index map allocates areas into four categories, spanning from very low to high vulnerability. The analysis highlights that a substantial portion of the region falls within the medium vulnerability category, covering approximately 703.29 km2 (50.99%). This is trailed by the low and very low vulnerable categories, which account for around 564.81 km2 (40.94%) and 74.83 km2 (5.38%) respectively. Notably, the northwestern sector of the learning part is classified as highly vulnerable, encompassing approximately 37.14 km2 (2.69%). Both vulnerability index results are compared with the Nitrate concentration for the scatter plot's statistical analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
