Abstract: In the face of escalating quantitative overexploitation of groundwater coupled with a deterioration in resource quality, there is a critical need to shift towards effective water resource management. In Morocco, the national water plan promotes treated wastewater reuse Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) is a potentiel method for reusing. While SAT is highly advantageous, it requires proper pretreatment to safeguard public health and mitigate environmental impacts. The aim of this paper is to assess the membrane biological reactor (MBR), as a pre-treatment step prior to SAT. For this purpose, the treatment performance of the wastewater treatment plant of the Mediouna city, located 17 km south-east of Casablanca in Morocco was analyzed over the period 2013–2023, the study aligns the plant's treated wastewater quality with international SAT standards. The analysis reveals consistently high purification performance for parameters such as COD, BOD5, TSS, TKN, and total Phosphorus, averaging 95%, 99%, 100%, 80%, and 47% efficiency, respectively. The plant's treatment level complies with WHO and US EPA standards for SAT, though additional treatment is necessary for Californian drinking water standards. Of the 27 parameters examined, only Chlorides exceed the most permissive concentration, due to groundwater use by industrial facilities in Mediouna. Overall, the study serves as a decision support tool for crafting water quality regulations, referencing international standards for artificial recharge, and underscores the suitability of the MBR technology as pretreatment before the SAT application.
