Abstract: This contribution integrates information from 108 measured sections, three pseudosections, eight events, 268 taxa of ostracods and planktonic foraminifera, and 353 samples from Santonian-Maastrichtian deposits on the eastern flank of the Mississippi Embayment, USA, into a single event composite using the heuristic software constrained optimization (CONOP). Two strategies are used to establish the sample framework prior to running the analyses: the construction of composite reference sections and integration of sequence boundaries. Using these strategies results in 544 events that occurred during the ~20 m.y. time interval studied, resulting in an overall average of one event per 36,764 years. Correlations based on this event stratigraphic framework and published literature are applied to construct a Wheeler diagram that displays the ages and lithofacies across the study area. Diachroneity of the lithostratigraphic units calibrates the sluggishness of relative sea level change during the Late Cretaceous. Trends of diversity, rates of evolutionary appearances, and extinctions of ostracods indicate three community stasis intervals separated by intervals of high rates of evolutionary turnover: the Lower Campanian, the Upper Campanian, and the uppermost Campanian-Maastrichtian. In the older two turnover intervals, a spike in evolutionary appearances precedes a spike in extinctions, causing a peak in diversity followed by a drop in diversity. Diversity of ostracods peaks at >90 species during the mid-Campanian and is associated with the maximum flooding surface of the deepest sequence in the Cretaceous of the region. No Cretaceous ostracod species survived the K-Pg boundary event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
