Abstract: Pakistan, a developing country, has been facing a serious energy crisis for over a decade. There is a huge gap in the supply and demand of energy in Pakistan. Keeping in view the potential of renewable energy sources for Pakistan, the Hybrid Renewable Energy System (HRES) is the best possible option for the electrification of areas where the reach of grid electricity is difficult. This study is related to designing an off-grid Hybrid PV/Biomass system and simulating the system using HOMER Pro. The system is optimized using HOMER and the optimization results include a 15-kW biogas generator, 11.5 kW solar PV modules, 16 Li-ion batteries of 1kWh, and a 10.8 kW converter. 71,280 kWh/year can be generated by applying the proposed HRES. Economic results indicated that the NPC of the system is $95,858, LCOE is $0.104/kWh with an operating cost of $5,107/year and an initial capital investment of $24,930 will be required. The payback period of 7.7 years has been determined. The study is presented as a basis for grid-independent regions, considering ongoing economic and industrial conditions, it is indispensable to encourage the designers and engineers to take a step towards the designing of grid-independent HRES for rural electrification.
