Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive parametric study to investigate the effect of soil layering on the flexural behaviour of circular plate foundations using a semi-analytical model. The semi-analytical model considers a uniformly loaded circular plate, resting on various layered soils, with a finite thickness. The model assumes each soil layer to be elastic in a half space. Results from the parametric study provide valuable insights into the complex interaction between the plate foundation and the supporting layered soil. Findings include: (a) the bending moment is greatest at the centre of the plate when the founding soil is very weak, but the location of the maximum bending moment shifts towards the edge of the plate as the soil becomes stiffer; (b) for a circular plate resting on a two-layered soil, having a thin, soft soil overlying a stiff soil beneath the foundation can be more detrimental in terms of an angular distortion than having a thick, soft soil; and (c) for a circular plate resting on a three-layered soil, treating a layered soil as a single layer with a simple or weighted average of stiffnesses would not produce a correct flexural response of the circular plate foundation.
