Abstract: The article focuses on the multidimensional research of energy consumption in European Union (EU) countries, emphasizing its technological, economic, environmental, and social aspects within the context of the EU’s energy transition and regulatory framework. It highlights four main research strands: the energy transition and policy impacts, agriculture and the bioeconomy, industry and transport, and waste management linked to the circular economy. The article identifies key research gaps, including the need for integrated technical, economic, and regulatory analyses, high-resolution comparative data, exploration of just transition and social impacts, multi-sectoral systemic approaches, and closer links between energy efficiency, industrial competitiveness, and resource use. Overall, it underscores the evolving interdisciplinarity of energy consumption research and calls for greater methodological and sectoral integration to support sustainable energy reduction without compromising economic competitiveness or social equity.
