Abstract: This article focuses on energy consumption in European Union (EU) countries, examining it as a multifaceted challenge involving technological, economic, environmental, social, and institutional dimensions. It presents research organized into four main themes: systemic and macroeconomic analyses of renewable energy and circular economy impacts; decentralization of energy markets including prosumerism and peer-to-peer trading; transport and logistics with attention to emissions and cost-efficiency; and demand-side factors such as building design, social acceptance, and energy poverty. The article identifies research gaps, notably the need for integrated studies linking policy, market models, and household behavior, as well as further exploration of social justice, public acceptance, and the effects of recent energy crises. It concludes that future energy research in the EU should emphasize the interplay between energy efficiency, social inclusivity, digitalization, and governance to support a just and effective energy transition.
