| Abstract: | The article focuses on contemporary research into energy consumption in European Union (EU) countries, emphasizing its multifaceted nature encompassing systemic, technological, social, and behavioral dimensions. It highlights four main research themes: the transition of the energy mix and energy security; the electrification of transport as a driver of new energy demand and decarbonization; end-user consumption patterns, particularly in households and buildings; and advances in predictive and analytical methods for energy management. The article identifies research gaps including the need for integrated approaches combining policy, consumer behavior, and equity considerations; better integration of transport electrification with power systems; transferability of predictive models; multi-scale analysis linking components to entire systems; and deeper exploration of the social costs and infrastructure challenges of the energy transition. Overall, it underscores that future EU energy consumption research will require more integrated, comparative, and multi-level perspectives to address energy security, decarbonization, economic competitiveness, and social justice effectively.
