Abstract: Chapter 1 of the book "Petroleum Reservoir Simulations: A Basic Approach" is presented. It discusses reservoir simulation in the oil industry becoming the customary way for solving engineering problems in reservoirs. It also discusses the major steps used to develop a reservoir simulator including formulation, discretization and well representation. The importance of the Engineering and Mathematical approaches are also presented.
