| Abstract: | This book is intended to serve as a practical introduction both to the phonology of English and to the general practices and techniques used in teaching and learning pronunciation. It is written primarily for the teacher who has had little or no formal exposure to the field of linguistics, but who has an interest in becoming acquainted with some of the elements of phonology and the application of linguistic facts to teaching or learning pronunciation. The book begins with one of the common definitions of language, and then proceeds to a general discussion of sounds and symbols and phonetics, and finally to a presentation of the segmental and suprasegmental phonemes and intonation patterns of English. One entire chapter is devoted to techniques of teaching and learning pronunciation and includes several sample drills. A glossary at the end of the book defines many of the technical terms used.
