Abstract: The problem of interference caused by linguistic transfer in second language learning does not increase with the number of languages that the student has acquired. The ability to learn a second, third, or fourth language depends on what Chomsky calls "the language acquisition device," which is a capacity or a sensitivity formed by a combination of linguistic universals (phonologic, syntactic, and semantic, or the interrelations between these components). This sensitivity to linguistic universals permits a child of up to 12 years of age to learn several languages easily and quickly, provided that language exposure is direct and with regularity. Adults lose this facility after they have internalized the grammar of their own language. To learn a new language, an adult must become aware of linguistic universals. As the adult becomes more conscious of linguistic universals in learning the new language, language learning becomes easier. The mental state appropriate to learning languages, that is, linguistic sensitivity, becomes more effective as the student learns other languages. (VM)
