Abstract: The Program of Basic Studies (P.B.S.) is a 2-year-old project developed at the University of Maine at Farmington. The program provides a means for college entrance and a subsequent support program for disadvantaged and physically handicapped individuals. A secondary objective concerns the training of undergraduates as tutors, tutor-counselors, and teaching assistants. Prospective teacher experiences involved the individual tutor-counseling, group counseling situations, and a teaching phase of the program. The teaching phase involved tutoring an individual or small group in a skill or content area. The trainee can advance to a teaching assistant either in the deficiency area or in the training component itself. The training modules are designed for pre- and post-student teaching experiences and include various types of group instruction, program development, teaching strategies, diagnostic procedures, remediation, and clinic techniques. The counseling role involves academic and personal counseling on a one-to-one or small group basis. Each component has an instruction package and "on-job" work experience. The experiences provide the trainee with an exposure to a variety of individuals ranging from 50-year old adults to young children, and from non-readers to cultural and racial differences.
