Abstract: This guide is intended to help members of school district governing boards understand more clearly their responsibilities and how to obtain sufficient factual information regarding existing unsafe school buildings. The first part provides an outline of procedures that members of the school district governing board should follow when obtaining structural survey reports and cost estimates. It also contains information that a governing board should use as a basis for its decision on whether a school building should be reconstructed or replaced. The second part contains an explanation of structural engineering requirements for school buildings. It has been included to assist governing boards in understanding the responsibilities and concerns of an architect or a structural engineer who examines a school building and submits a structural survey report stating that the building is either "safe" or "unsafe." The third part of the guide presents a review of the current legal requirements regarding pre-1933 (Field Act) school buildings. (Author)
