| Abstract: | This document incorporates the findings of a project initiated to find solutions to the problems of planning, designing, constructing, and utilizing facilities to house career education on the part of educational administrators. Traditional solutions, continually increasing costs, and the need for greater emphasis on the learning environment provided the impetus for focusing attention on the options for local determination with minimum emphasis on regulating procedures. This document explores questions that should be asked about the construction of a career preparation center--whether it be a new building, an addition, or the remodeling of an existing facility. Some of these probes concern the kind of building to be built, the method to be used in its construction, and whether time and/or cost are of the utmost importance. In answer to such questions, the author explores some of the new concepts that have been emerging and developing in the construction process, such as systems building, fast track scheduling, construction management, and the "recycling" of existing buildings. Citations are provided in each case for further reading on the subject. (Author/MLF) |
