Abstract: A sociolinguistic, ethnographic analysis of Christian Science oral testimonies is reported in this study. The study is based on the analysis of transcripts of four testimonial meetings of a branch church, interpreted through knowledge of Christian Science official literature, informal interaction with Christian Scientists, and knowledge of other testimonial meetings attended by the author over a one-year period. While traditional social science and linguistic approaches are drawn on, this study differs qualitatively from these approaches by focusing primary attention on the situated production of these speech acts as accomplishments of a particular community. The purpose of this ethnography is to demonstrate how the management of these acts achieves the communication of a complex, shared transcendence which is analyzed as a coparticipation in a transcendent province of meaning which unites Christian Scientists as a community. While this study focuses exclusively on particular speech acts of one community, it is suggested that the methods used are applicable to the study of transcendent communication in general.
