Abstract: Reviewed in the interim report on revision of the existing American National Standards Institute provision is current literature on barrier free design for disabled individuals. The report addresses the following topics: the history of access as a civil right; demographic aspects (including information on task dysfunctions of disabled persons related to architectural building elements); standards and building codes review (including tables on scope of state and federal regulations); review of human factors research on functional anthropometry, biomechanics, information display and specific task environments; spatial behavior of disabled persons; analysis of building products (including a suggested matrix for use in evaluating such products as plumbing fixtures, telephone booths, and refrigerators); and recommendations on design features.
