Abstract: The University of New Haven, a private urban institution, has consistently published a strong commitment to service to the "community" and the "New Haven student." This paper tests the degree to which the university complies with its commitment. A social structure of the surrounding communities was extracted from the U.S. Census Reports. The community social structure was statistically compared to a social structure analysis of the university's student body. Results show a reasonable relationship between the community social structure and the student body social structure. Conclusions support the proposition that the university is community oriented.
