| Abstract: | Concepts currently used in conveying technical information about the operation and maintenance of equipment in the U.S. Army were investigated. The objective was to develop a more cost effective maintenance program by reducing personnel costs through a more effective software link between the hardware and maintenance personnel. The study objectives were organized into seven major tasks: (1) To identify new concepts for maintenance that hold promise for reducing the cost of equipment ownership, (2) to analyze the new concepts in order to identify the fundamental elements responsible for their effect upon maintenance cost, (3) to match fundamental elements to particular Army situations, evaluate their validity, and make cost projections, (4) to review the fundamental elements against the commodity systems and project the cost of ownership which could accrue through use of these elements to produce all Army technical manuals, (5) to prepare a specification which includes all the fundamental elements tailored to appropriate Army situations, (6) to prepare a sample manual based on the specification, and (7) to prepare a plan for testing the sample manual. This report summarizes interim reports for each of the seven tasks. (Author/NJ) |
