| Abstract: | The United States changeover to the use of the SI (International Metric) measurement language presents the construction industry with the need to review and adapt many product standards and practices for the use of metric measurement units. These adaptations and changes can bring substantial benefits to the industry in the form of permanently recurring cost savings. A practice of potentially great benefit would be the incorporation of dimensional coordination in the new metric standards for sizes of building products. For such benefits to be realized however, the involved issues must be effectively addressed and the requisite decisions made and implemented. Considerable literature pertinent to the issues and decisions has been published in the United States and in other (primarily English-speaking) countries that have been implementing metriciation and dimensional coordination in the past decade. This report aids construction industry consideration and resolution of metrication decisions by providing a guide to the best available resources relevant to the issues. A list of key issues and relevant questions to those issues is presented and referenced to a list of sources with abstracts. The key issues are: metrication, dimensional coordination, institutional arrangements, international interchange, and general. (MP/Author) |
