Abstract: The 1978 Summer Bridge Program attempted to aid twenty-six Native American students in the transition from high school to regular classes at Yavapai College, Prescott, Arizona. The five week program presented an orientation to college programs and to the complicated living patterns of Anglo society. An English as a second language course provided basic knowledge of the language; a reading and study skills course developed study techniques, vocabulary, comprehension, and listening and reading techniques. The self-career exploration course viewed career possibilities with emphasis placed on the importance of a college education and how this relates to the success of each individual tribe. Field trips went to various job sites, to Phoenix, and to other places featuring differing life styles. Extra-curricular activities included sight seeing, picnics, basketball, and swimming and tennis lessons. Strong-Campbell Interest Inventories helped career planning. Sixteen of the students decided to stay in college for fall of 1978; they received orientation to the various departments and services within the college. Officials and students considered the Bridge Program highly successful. The academic components of the program are described at the conclusion of the paper along with recommendations for improvement.
