Abstract: This third edition of popular and useful reference works, which emphasizes the needs of small libraries, contains 975 annotated entries and lists 201 additional titles (most with bibliographic and order information) in the annotations, representing an expansion of 30 percent over the second edition. The appendix lists 116 basic or core reference tools keyed to the annotated entries of the text. Recommended first choices are starred to assist librarians in selecting materials to meet the information needs of their communities. Sections are devoted to guides to standard reference sources, current reviews, bibliographies, general works, and 19 subject classifications, including biography, philosophy and religion, language, literature, visual arts, applied arts, crafts and hobbies, performing arts, music, social sciences, geography and archaeology, education, political science and law, business and economics, history, science, applied science, home life and social customs, and sports and games.
