Abstract: This document describes a project to develop a 320-hour tractor trailer driver training program and a 20-hour commercial driver licensing upgrade training program. Of 34 graduates from the training program, 28 secured employment in the trucking industry. From August 1989 to June 1990, 725 students were trained in the upgrade training program with a 100 percent success rate on the National License examination. The five-page project report is followed by the program materials. The training program consists of two sessions. Session I covers laws; double and triple trailers; tank vehicles; and hazardous materials. Session II covers hazardous materials. The retraining program consists of four sessions. Session I covers law; control systems; basic control; shifting; backing; and speed management. Session II topics are visual search; communication; space management; night operation; extreme driving conditions; and hazard perception. Session III topics are pretrip and posttrip; air brakes; skid control and recovery; emergency maneuvers; and emergency reporting. Session IV covers cargo inspection; weights and balances; securing cargo; special cargo; combination vehicles; and curricula overview. Each session concludes with test-taking skills and a proficiency test with answer key. Each topic consists of some or all of these components: objectives; topic outline or information; and techniques/procedures and activities. (YLB)
