| Abstract: | This document summarizes the first wave of data collection and findings for the elementary, middle, and senior high schools participating as pilot sites for the Positive Attitudes in Tennessee Schools (PATS) Project. Following an overview of the goals of the project, the school improvement change model used by the project, and the research and evaluation components of the project, the method and procedures for data collection and analysis of data are described. A summary of school climate data gathered from 1,444 staff members at 37 school pilot sites includes information on order, administrative leadership, school facilities and environment, school community environment, instructional programs, student expectations, and collaborative problem solving. School climate dimensions are next discussed in terms of selected variables such as school level, school-community type, and age groups. Using 1989 data obtained from over 8,000 students, the document discusses 11 aspects of classroom climate and 4 dimensions of the student's self-concept as a learner. Both topics are reviewed in light of variables such as school community type and students' academic performance, extracurricular participation, educational plans, tendency to drop out, and at-risk status.
