Abstract: The starting point of this thesis is the hypothesis that in Spanish there are conventionalized expressions that signal both the articulation of text parts and the speaker's attitude towards the utterance. "Pragmatic Expressions" (PEs) are fixed lexical forms that contribute to text creation in relation to the context of enunciation, are oriented to general principles of cooperative interaction, and act as "deictic signals." Among the 26 forms identified as PEs and fully described are "bueno,""mira,""che,""digamos,""viste," and "no?" The findings include the function of ideational content organization, their contribution to conversational synchrony, and their association to speech acts and modality. New hypotheses are explored concerning the use of these signals to trigger inferences about the social relationship between interlocutors, their use as realizations of global discourse strategies, and the correlation between their occurrence and speaker's discourse role and repertoire. Independent evidence for the analysis comes from a case of code-switching. The implications for language teaching are discussed. There are two appendices with quantitative data from the corpus of spontaneous, nonhierarchical conversations. (Author)
