| Abstract: | This second edition of guidelines for weeding school library media collections is addressed especially to elementary and secondary school library media centers and to community college and vocational school library resource centers in Iowa. This publication is designed for those who want weeding of all formats of materials and equipment (not just printed materials) to become an integral part of their selection-acquisition-use-discard cycle. Some philosophy about weeding is included, and specific guidelines are summarized. A summary of past departmental policy statements and planning procedures dealing with library collection weeding is followed by topical sections on: why, when, and how to weed; subjective and objective weeding criteria; the eight phases of the weeding procedure; weeding guidance for print and nonprint collections in schools and community colleges; and how to discard.
