Abstract: This collection of Aleut stories was originally collected by Russian ethnographer Waldemar Jochelson in 1909-10 in an attempt to preserve Aleut culture. An introductory chapter offers historical background, information about Aleut dialects and dialect groups, notes on the original fieldwork, and descriptive and technical information about the texts and their editing and translation. Following this are 75 Eastern Aleut texts (left page) and their translations (right page), 4 Atkan texts, and 8 Attuan texts. Photographs and maps provide illustrations. Eastern Aleut song texts and Atkan texts are appended. (MSE)
Notes: "Collected 1909-1910 by Waldemar Jochelson...Appendix: Aleut lore published 1840 and 1846 by Ioann Veniaminov, re-edited by Knut Bergsland."
